Snowmobiler OK after running into open water on Beaver Dam Lake; two arrested for OWI

BEAVER DAM -- Officials with the Beaver Dam Fire Department tell FOX6 News a snowmobiler is OK after running into open water near Jones Island on Beaver Dam Lake on Thursday night, January 28th.

The call for this incident came in around 9:30 p.m. for a snowmobile that went into the water.

Preliminary investigation shows that three individuals were traveling east across Beaver Dam lake on snowmobiles when they came upon open water on the east shore near Sunset Blvd in the Town of Beaver Dam.

Two of the three snowmobiles were able to navigate across the open water and make it to shore. The third snowmobile became submerged approximately 8-10 feet from shore in 4-5 feet of water.

The operator of the snowmobile was able to wade to shore. When Deputies arrived, his wet clothing was removed and he was placed in the backseat of a patrol vehicle to warm up. Beaver Dam Paramedics arrived on scene and took additional measures to reverse any hypothermia that could have occurred.

All three are residents of Dodge County. Two of the snowmobilers were arrested and received citations for Operating a Snowmobile while Intoxicated.

The incident remains under investigation by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office Recreation Patrol Officers.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office reminds those who choose to use the snowmobile trails and waterways to be aware of the conditions and ride in a safe and responsible manner. Extra precaution should be taken at night.
