Sheboygan officials investigate crash caused by box in roadway

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- Officials in Sheboygan are investigating a traffic crash that occurred on March 10th just before 2:00 p.m. on East Wisconsin Highway 28 and Washington Avenue, in the 3200 block.

Officials say a 1999 gray Mazda pickup truck driven by a 72-year-old Sheboygan resident was headed east on Washington Avenue. Two family members (ages 61 and 29) were in the cab of the truck.

As they were traveling east on the roadway in the outside lane of traffic, a box in the open bed of the truck bounced out and landed on the roadway.

The driver of the Mazda stopped his truck in the traffic lane and was intending on going out to retrieve the box.

Then, a 2001 Mercury Sable driven by a 43-year-old Waldo resident headed east, struck the box and as it flew up, the driver of the Sable looked in her mirror and struck the rear of the Mazda pickup.

Upon impact, the Sable caught fire. The pickup truck sustained extensive damage.

Two passengers of the Mazda were taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mazda was cited for failure to properly secure load.
