Schools prepare for hot, humid weather Tuesday
WHITEFISH BAY (WITI) -- The heat is on! According to FOX6 Meteorologist Brittney Sager, Tuesday, September 10th will be hot, humid and hazy with highs in the low 90s. Throughout the summer, southeast Wisconsin has experienced similar weather to what we're expecting Tuesday -- but this time, students are back in school.
Last time southeast Wisconsin had temperatures around 90 degrees was at the end of August -- before most Milwaukee schools were back in session. However, Saint Monica Catholic School in Whitefish Bay had already started classes, and instead of cancelling, they battled the heat from inside their classrooms, without air conditioning.
In an effort to battle the heat, school officials say there were plenty of fans throughout the building, students were encouraged to have water at their desk and the uniform policy was relaxed.
"I basically said they could come in shirts and shorts as long as they abide by the dress code. It helped a little bit," said Lori Schramka from St. Monica School.
As southeast Wisconsin braces for high temperatures on Tuesday, it looks like St. Monica will be going back to similar tactics.
Other Milwaukee area schools are also bracing for the heat as they encourage students to dress in light weight clothing and to take a water bottle to class.
During extreme heat conditions, the Milwaukee Health Department is advising citizens to take the following precautions as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to prevent heat-related illness:
Stay Cool
Stay Hydrated
Stay Informed
The MHD will be enhancing surveillance for heat-related illness in the coming days, and working with Milwaukee Heat Task Force partners to address vulnerable population needs during this period.
Persons who require special assistance may call 211, the Community Information Line in Milwaukee County. Additional heat safety tips and information are available atwww.milwaukee.gov/hotweathersafety.
