Saint Frances Cabrini School in West Bend evacuated following equipment malfunction

WEST BEND -- Saint Frances Cabrini School on Hawthorne Drive near Main Street in West Bend was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon, September 27th.

West Bend police and officials with the West Bend Fire Department responded around 2:15 p.m. to investigate a report of smoke coming from a classroom.

Students and staff members were safely evacuated -- and relocated to Saint Frances Cabrini Church.

FOX6 News is told an equipment malfunction caused smoke to begin filling part of the building. The smoke was created by an electrical motor for a classroom air handler/thermostat. A mechanical failure caused the motor to burn up.

The smoke was ventilated from the building before staff and students were allowed to return.

Damage is estimated at about $2,000.

No one was hurt.
