Republican state Rep. Duey Stroebel announces he's running for state Senate

MADISON (AP) — Republican state Rep. Duey Stroebel is running for the state Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Glenn Grothman after he was elected to Congress.

Stroebel also ran for Congress but came in third in the August Republican primary won by Grothman. Stroebel announced Monday that he is now running for the state Senate seat Grothman will resign before taking his spot in Congress.

Stroebel is the first candidate to announce for Grothman's Senate seat, which is in a strong Republican part of the state north of Milwaukee. It includes portions of Ozaukee, Washington, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan and Calumet counties.

Stroebel, of Cedarburg, has been in the state Assembly since May 2011.

Gov. Scott Walker will call a special election once Grothman officially resigns.
