Police warn residents about financial phone scams

MEQUON -- The Mequon Police Department is warning residents to be wary of fraudulent attempts to obtain money through financial phone scams.

Officials say during the last several weeks, they've seen an increase in the number of phone scams, which the citizens have reported to the Mequon Police Department. In the last three days, they have taken seven separate reports of attempts and successful financial phone scams.

The perpetrators of these phone scams tend to target male and female citizens 60 years of age and over, and who have children and grandchildren. The perpetrators of these scams clearly have used different resources to obtain detailed information regarding the victims' families and use this information in the scam to manipulate the victims into sending money via Western Union to different locations.
