One-year-old Maltese puppy chews off leg to survive, now 'Mink' needs a forever home

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's a miracle she survived. A one-year-old Maltese mix was left tied up outside unattended and began to chew off her back leg in order to survive. Now, 'Mink' is in search of a forever home.

The young pup was rushed to the Wisconsin Humane Society and underwent emergency surgery to remove her injured leg and save her life.

Now that Mink is in the recovery stages, she is looking for a special home -- but still faces some challenges.

Mink has a grade 3 luxating patella on her remaining rear leg, which may require surgery to correct.

The Wisconsin Humane Society is urging anyone who is interested to be prepared to allow Mink extra time to adjust in her new home -- saying "it's important that Mink's new guardian is patient, especially in the first few weeks at home."

Caregivers at the humane society are also suggesting Mink's ideal home would be a quiet environment with no children under the age of 16.
