One man dead, another burned in apartment fire in Caledonia

One man is dead and another burned in an apartment fire in Caledonia. The fire broke out early Saturday morning in the second-floor apartment above the Corner Connections bar on Douglas Ave., near 6 Mile Road and State Highway 32.

Two men were in the upstairs apartment at the time of the fire. 53-year-old Mark Stroede did not make it out of the building in time. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. His roomate, 48-year-old David Peters was badly burned was taken to the St. Mary's burn center in Milwaukee for treatment. He was listed in critical condition.

A half dozen fire departments helped put out the fire.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but for Brian O'Neill, it's going to be a tragic holiday weekend. He was a friend of both the men.

"I know Dave, his partner that lived upstairs with them, them two just loved each other they all.." he says. "Whenever I'd see each individual they'd talk about each other what kind of good men they both were and it's not going to be the same without them."
