Officials respond to structure fire in Sheboygan

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- The Sheboygan Fire Department responded to the scene of an apartment fire on North 11th Street in Sheboygan Tuesday morning, March 26th.

While responding, fire personnel were informed that a 14-year-old male was trapped on the roof of the front porch and would need to be rescued. First arriving units quickly deployed an extension ladder and assisted the trapped occupant to the ground.

The teen was transported to a local hospital along with an adult male occupant of the same apartment who was able to evacuate himself prior to fire units arriving.

Both were assessed for potential smoke inhalation and later released.

According to authorities, the upper apartment unit had five occupants, four of whom escaped via a rear stairwell.  In addition, two lower apartment occupants escaped prior to the fire department arriving.

Officials say working smoke detectors can be credited with notifying the sleeping residents.

Officials estimate the damage to the structure and contents at $75,000.

At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
