Neighbors react after tragic, double-fatal, weekend wrong-way crash

This weekend, two people were killed in a head-on collision on I-94 in the Town of Delafield after police say a woman drove more than seven miles in the wrong direction, and hit the vehicle of a man driving to training at work, head-on.

Both of the individuals involved died at the scene.

One of those individuals was 41-year-old Brian St. Germaine, a father of three from Watertown. FOX6 sat down with Nicole St. Germaine, Brian's wife, twice this weekend. She says she'd like to see legislative changes to ensure that this doesn't happen again.

Police say the wrong way driver was 44-year-old Dawn Ewing, and they say she had a history of alleged driving related offenses.

In fact, Ewing was set to appear in court on the charges Monday.

Now, Ewing's neighbor, Karenjoy Hardiman, is speaking out. Hardiman lives in the same neighborhood as Ewing did, and says she's deeply saddened by what happened.

"I was just so sad, and started praying for the families immediately," Hardiman said.

Court documents say Ewing faced charges that included OWI, refusing to take a test for intoxication, unsafe lane deviation, and speeding on a freeway. She pleaded not guilty.

"That family over here, with the children, are going to be affected for the rest of their lives.  The man who was killed, his children are going to be affected for the rest of their lives," Hardiman said.

Meanwhile, Nicole St. Germaine and her three daughters are still trying to come to terms with the tragic death of their husband and father. The couple had been married for fifteen years.

"It hasn't really sunk in. It comes in and out. It's absolutely shocking.  They only way we can get through this is through our faith and our family," St. Germaine said.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate this incident. They are awaiting toxicology reports to determine whether alcohol may have been a factor.
