Music is passion for Bruce Messner, traveling musician

MILWAUKEE -- Sometimes, putting off a hobby or a dream can lead to feelings of "what if." One motorist found the motivation to peruse a passion once put in park.

Bruce Messner drives his 2008 Chevy Cobalt to a park just to play the trumpet.

"This is my passion and pleasure -- it surely is!" Bruce Messner said.

With the window down, that passion is passed on to passersby.

Messner is a former music teacher who doesn't want his trumpet troubling neighbors.

"I got a metal band living next to me right now, so I know how that disturbance can be," Messner said.

Messner says an artist is his own worst critic -- another reason why he continues to play and try to improve. Also -- to pick up where he left off.

"I went into sales for a period of time in which I never touched a horn. I'm very, very regretful of that," Messner said.

Gas may be expensive, but Messner says putting off his passion is a far greater cost.

"People say 'how long do you want to play?' I say, 'I want to do this till I die,'" Messner said.

Messner has taken his show on the road for over a dozen years. He hopes with enough practice he'll be able to get out of his car and play in a music club.
