Milwaukee's "Slice of Ice" opens for the season

MILWAUKEE -- The "Slice of Ice" outdoor ice skating rink at Red Arrow Park in downtown Milwaukee opened for the season Thursday, and the refrigerated rink can accommodate 100 skaters at a time, and is expected to be open through March, weather permitting.

Opening day featured free skate rentals until 6:00 p.m., and skating is always free, if you bring your own skates. Otherwise, skates cost between $7 and $8, depending on your age.

Milwaukee County Parks Director Sue Black says the outdoor rink provides a little something for everyone. "You've got families, sweethearts, it's free, and it's just something that is good for everybody," Black said.

Some figure skaters took to the ice Thursday for opening day, but any skill level will do at the outdoor ice rink. The rink also features a warming house and a rooftop overlook for those who would rather stay off the ice and observe. The warming house features restroom facilities, skate rentals, lockers and Starbucks coffee.
