Milwaukee's East Library moves into temporary location

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee's East Library has moved to its temporary location on Murray Avenue on the city's East Side.

The East Library's original building on North Avenue has closed its doors for good.

The library is being demolished to make way for a new east branch library, apartments and retail space.

The temporary location will house the library's collection during the construction.

"The East Side neighborhood were great users. This is a community that really values the library so we definitely wanted to provide some service during the construction period," Milwaukee Public Library Director Paula Kiely said.

About 20,000 of the library's 50,000 items are in the temporary location. However, users can request any of the items though the library's electronic holds system online.

Construction on the new library is set to be complete late next year.
