Mequon police report numerous thefts from unlocked vehicles during the Fourth of July weekend

MEQUON -- Mequon police and city officials are reminding residents to lock their vehicles after numerous reports of thefts from vehicles during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

According to a Mequon Police Department alert, on the evenings of July 3rd and July 4th, police received numerous complaints of entries into unlocked vehicles.

Sixteen reports have come from subdivisions in the area between the Milwaukee River and Port Washington Road.

These entries have occurred in the late evening and early morning hours -- between 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.

Police say the suspects have taken cash, computers, golf equipment, loaded firearms and other items.

In one case, a vehicle was stolen when they keys were left inside.

In each of these cases, police say, there has been no forced entry.

Police say it is important that you a) lock your vehicle, and b) call police if you hear or see something suspicious.

In many of these reported incidents, people have seen and heard people and have heard car doors being opened and closed. They have also heard other noises that would alert them to the fact that people are outside (dogs barking, talking, etc…) and have failed to call the police.

Police say the individuals responsible for these entries are going to continue until they are caught.
