Lots of wreckage from overnight crashes, but no serious injuries

MILWAUKEE/WAUKESHA COUNTIES (WITI) -- The weather is to blame for dozens of accidents on area freeway systems Monday night, April 14th -- including a 30-vehicle pileup on Highway 45. Miraculously, there were no serious injuries.

FOX6 News on Tuesday, April 15th visited the overflow lot at N&S Towing, at 83rd and National. Most of the vehicles in the lot on Tuesday were involved in the accident on Highway 45 near Mayfair Road.

No one was seriously hurt -- which is hard to believe when looking at the wreckage!

"When I first pulled up on the scene, it looked like a war zone," J.J. Sancinati with N&S Towing says of the scene at Highway 45 and Mayfair Road on Monday night.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says 26 vehicles had to be towed -- including a school bus with 42 children on board.

Somehow, officials reported just three minor injuries in a major traffic incident.

Niki Burczyk wasn't as lucky. A single-vehicle crash left her with two fractured feet and 15 stitches above her eye.

"Kind of fish-tailed around and ran right into the median. Didn`t hit any other cars. Our air bags went off. I hit my head on the dash," Burczyk told FOX6 News.

There were plenty of other accidents beyond the 51 reported in Milwaukee County.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department responded to more than 40, including wrecks that shut down I-94 and I-43.

"I believe we had one on I-94 involving six vehicles but with that, there were numerous minor accidents that occurred because of that as people were approaching that accident," Jennifer Wallschlaeger with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department said.

The crashes kept tow trucks running all night.

Sancinati was supposed to get out of work at 10:00 p.m. -- but didn't leave until 7:00 a.m.!

"We were not expecting that we were gonna get 100 to 125 calls last night. We thought winter was over but it`s Wisconsin," Sancinati said.
