Little Switzerland busy Sunday ahead of bitter cold

SLINGER (WITI) -- We saw fresh snowfall this weekend, and this week, we'll see sub-zero temperatures yet again. Sunday, January 26th was the perfect day for a little outdoor recreation after the snow and before the cold.

Skiers and snowboarders rushed to Little Switzerland in Slinger on Sunday to get in a little fun before the bone-chilling cold sets in.

"Trying to beat the weather at least today because next week it's going to get cold so it's going to be beautiful today," one Little Switzerland visitor told FOX6 News.

"Everyone loves a powder day and the timing couldn't have been better. It snowed overnight. We groomed late last night and conditions are absolutely perfect today," Mike Schmitz, co-owner of Little Switzerland said.

Some say the chance to churn up fresh powder, combined with the fact that bitterly cold weather is on its way left Sunday as the best option for an outing on the slopes.

"The people that want to get out and enjoy winter realize it's going to be cold on Monday and Tuesday and they're here today," Schmitz said.

Schmitz says they're prepared for the deep freeze to mean fewer customers for a couple of days.

"Ideally thirty and sunny makes for a great day as a business owner," Schmitz said.

While the sudden drop in temperature may persuade many of us to stay inside on Monday and Tuesday -- Schmitz expects some won't be so eager to hang up their skis just yet. At least one skier says it's all in your preparation.

"Doesn't mean you can't come out and do it you just got to dress right for it," that skier said.

Schmitz says if temperatures get dangerously low, they may consider closing the slopes, but otherwise, they plan on being open. Schmitz says despite the cold stretches we've seen, business is definitely up this winter.
