Kids go Christmas shopping with Donald Driver
ASHWAUBENON -- Dozens of children from the Boys and Girls Club went shopping for Christmas with Green Bay Packers receiver Donald Driver!
No one will mistake him for Santa Claus, but Driver has his own way of making Christmas come early. "Keep going until you run out of money. That's what they say," Driver said. Driver passed out 40 Shopko gift cards to area children. Each card was worth $50.
"Christmas is a time of giving. This is an opportunity for my foundation, myself, my wife and kids to give to people less fortunate than we are," Driver said.
The children at the shopping spree are part of the mentoring program, Big Brothers Big Sisters. Ashley Huebschner and her little sister in the program, Victoria Torres, say this shopping experience was something they were happy to catch. "We were so excited. I responded right away to get us on the sign up list and luckily there was a spot left, because this is such a great opportunity," Huebschner said. "It's really nice because we really don't get much for Christmas and we get to get my loved ones what they want for Christmas," 11-year-old Torres said.
The children could spend the gift cards however they wanted, but if they needed any advice, Driver was happy to help. Some say meeting Driver was a gift in itself. "Meeting a guy such as him, for the stardom that he has, it's a great opportunity for anyone, and for me to be one of them is an honor to me," 16-year-old Chandler Roskom said.
As for Driver, the item on top of his wish list, can't be bought with a gift card, and it's not on any store shelves. "A Super Bowl ring. Another one," Driver said.
Driver says he has already taken part in similar shopping sprees this year in Milwaukee, Mississippi, Dallas and Houston. This shopping spree took place in Ashwaubenon.
