MILWAUKEE -- 9,000 gallons of jet fuel leaked from a pipeline at Mitchell International Airport. No more fuel is leaking and one of the runways is out of service so workers can find and fix the leak.
The primary north and south runway was shut down Friday. Crews were supposed to start digging in the morning, but certain FAA regulations prevented them from doing that. At this point, workers are simply trying to pinpoint the exact location of the leak.
Airport spokesman Ryan McAdams says despite the runway being closed for an indefinite time, the way planes take off and land will not be changed. "We very commonly just operate under one runway at a time so we can easily handle the schedule," said McAdams.
DNR spokesman Eric Nitschke said the underground pipeline at Mitchell International Airport has been shut down. The cleanup and containment efforts have been successful.
