Heavy rains prompt MMSD to initiate combined sewage overflow

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Heavy rains prompted the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) to take action on early Wednesday morning, June 18th in order to prevent basement backups.

According to its website, MMSD initiated a combined sewage overflow at 2:30 a.m.

Intense storms dropped more than two inches of rain in multiple locations between midnight and 2:30 a.m. and more than one inch of rain in many other locations.

At the time the overflow began, water was pouring into the regional sewer system at a rate of 7.5 billion gallons per day.
