Gunshot fired on UW-Oshkosh campus Saturday night

OSHKOSH (WITI) -- FOX6 News is learning a gunshot was fired inside UW-Oshkosh's Reeve Memorial Union on Saturday night, March 8th during a student-sponsored dance.

No one was injured -- and no one is in custody.

Police were called to the Reeve Memorial Union, where University Police say upwards of 300 people were participating in a dance hosted by UW-Oshkosh's Black Student Union.

University Police say they were initially called to the scene for a report of an altercation between two people inside the Reeve Memorial Union.

Police say a shot was fired just before 11:30 p.m. inside one of the second floor rooms being used for the dance.

University Police say a bullet hit the ceiling.

After the shot was fired, the Reeve Memorial Union was evacuated and locked down.

Police were able to quickly determine there was no immediate or broader threat to campus related to the incident inside the Reeve Memorial Union.

Shortly after 1:00 a.m., about an hour and 50 minutes after police responded to the scene, a text message and email were sent to the campus community regarding the incident.

UW-Oshkosh says it has services available via the on-campus Counseling Center for anyone who may need or want assistance in dealing with this stressful situation.

A statement on the UW-Oshkosh website says the following: "UW Oshkosh administration expresses great gratitude to the University Police, Oshkosh Police Department and all involved in Saturday’s response and the ongoing investigation."

A University Police official says there is some indication the individual responsible for firing the gun is not a UW-Oshkosh student -- but rather someone visiting campus.

Anyone with information on this incident ― including eyewitness reports, phone images or other tips―is encouraged to contact University Police at (920) 424-1216.
