MILWAUKEE -- With near freezing temperatures and a few snowflakes in the air, it may feel like winter, and some local kids are already getting into the holiday spirit. FOX6's Derica Williams was there as hundreds of students turned a downtown Milwaukee park into a festive wonderland.
A flurry of students transformed downtown Milwaukee's Cathedral Square Park into a "Community Spirit Park."
"When it's lit up, our hope is that they glimmer and glisten and draw attention to our beautiful tree," said Susan Stoner, Assistant Principle at Rufus King International Middle School.
As part of the 17th annual Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival, kids decorated trees, adorning them with special handmade ornaments.
"So we made all these ornaments in the art classes and I have all the kids help out, " said Liz Ramirez, teacher at Milwaukee Parkside School for the Arts.
Each piece was carefully constructed to reflect a class theme.
"The ball ornaments were made out of shattered CDs that we colored green and blue, our school colors," said Neil Bausch, 7th grade student at Milwaukee Parkside School for the Arts.
Students feel a sense of pride about their artwork.
"This kind of makes me feel like I did something with my school. also help me to remember the time I had here before I go off into high school," said Bausch.
“Community Spirit Park” at Cathedral Square Park is one of three downtown parks decorated for the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival. The lights of Cathedral Square Park, Pere Marquette Park and Zeidler Union Square will officially be turned on at the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival Kick-Off Extravaganza at 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 19.
Nearly 70 schools throughout metro Milwaukee took part in decorating the parks.
Attracting over 5,000 guests annually, this free celebration features Santa, musical performances, holiday acts, a dazzling fireworks show and free Jingle Bus rides presented by Meijer. Decorations of the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival will remain lit through Sunday, December 27th.
