Fundraiser planned to benefit Good Samaritan injured in shooting

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee man remains in the hospital after a double shooting early Saturday morning, January 5th at Third and National. Family members said he is a bar owner who was trying to do a good deed when he was caught in the middle.

The shooting took place around 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning outside The Red Arrow Bar.

Nicole Cortinas' husband, Marcos was severely injured after he was shot outside the bar. 

"The bullet went through his chest, traveled through his body and it did damage to his liver and small intestine, large intestine and kidney. The bullet that went in his pelvis came out and damaged the main artery in his leg," Cortinas said.

Marcos Cortinas' family members told FOX6 News a bar patron left to get something to eat on Saturday, and when she cam back, that's when the chaos began. 

“The girl came back in the bar and was yelling ‘someone help me.' That's when her boyfriend got shot in the arm first and he came out and got shot twice by a young kid. My brother-in-law was behind the bar and he came around to see what was going on and went outside. When he went outside he got shot,” Mark Roszina, Cortinas' brother-in-law said.

Roszina said the shooter was among a group of about five people.

"It was a young kid. They said he had a small silver handgun. One of the people in the bar was standing right next to him when he pulled it out," Roszina said.

Marcos Cortinas reportedly got shot when he went outside the bar to help a friend.

"We believe that people who were out there were ready to rob us because they were armed, they had brass knuckles and they were beating a friend that left the bar," Cortinas said.

Both Marcos Cortinas' friend and Cortinas were shot in the incident.

The shooting has also affected business at The Red Arrow Bar.

"I don't know what we're going to do. We're done. We've sunk tons of money into the business and trying to get it open. He's going to be out for a long time," Cortinas' said.

As he continues to recover, the community has stepped up to help the Cortinas family. Marcos Cortinas is also a tattoo artist, so Serenity Ink and the Monkey Bar set up a fundraiser in Cortinas' honor.

"He's always happy. A non-violent person who wants to help anyone out," Jesse Flores with Serenity Ink said.

The fundraiser is set for January 26th from 5:00 p.m. until midnight at Monkey Bar (1619 S. 1st Street) in Milwaukee.
