Free brats and beer in exchange for river cleanup help

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Dozens of volunteers showed up at Lincoln Creek Saturday morning, June 29th, to help clean up the waterway for the second annual Canoes for a Cause event.

The event is put on by the Milwaukee Riverkeepers, an organization focused on protecting and improving water quality in the Milwaukee River Basin, and Leinenkugel Brewing Company.

"We have a vision that our waterways will, one day, be fish-able and swim-able," said Karen Schapiro, Executive Director of Milwaukee Riverkeepers. "We are dead set that we will reach the day where we're going to have clean water for the benefit of all in the area to recreate."

Youngster Gabby Fernald said she was excited to participate in the cleanup.

"When it's cleaned up it's better because it's helping the environment and you feel good because you're protecting the animals," said Fernald.

Jake Leinenkugel said he's pleased with the progress of the partnership thus far.

"Canoes for a Cause is a good way for us to get out in Wisconsin communities, give back, and also bring people together - that they can get their river systems cleaned up, and keep them clean, for years to come," said Leinenkugel.

Volunteers were invited to a party at Harp Irish Bar where they received free brats, beer, and Summerfest tickets as a thank you for their efforts.
