Franklin elementary school closed, dozens of kids sick

FRANKLIN (WITI) -- Classes at Pleasant View Elementary School in Franklin are cancelled on Friday, May 17th because some 50 students got sick. Two staff members also got sick. Officials say those affected came down with gastroenteritis -- a stomach virus.

The symptoms being reported are: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and occasionally a low-grade fever. The Franklin School District is working closely with the health department to heighten hygiene measures at the school. Custodians are following procedures to decontaminate surfaces and to keep the building clean.

Students and staff who show symptoms should not return to school until being symptom-free for at least 48 hours.

Classes are expected to resume on Monday, May 20th.

As of now, the Franklin Health Department is investigating the cause of this outbreak.

In addition to classes being cancelled, the spring concert scheduled for Friday at Pleasant View has also been cancelled.
