Ford is recalling tens of thousands of its trucks over a software issue that can sometimes prevent a driver from seeing the video from the rear-facing camera.

Why you should care:

In its report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Detroit automaker explained how, if the camera "Views" menu is left open when a driver engages Reverse, the screen overlay does not dismiss. The camera display remains hidden until the driver closes the menu manually or puts the truck in Drive and starts going forward. 

The company added that the problem means the camera image violates a federal regulation and could increase the likelihood of a crash.

Recalled Ford trucks

By the numbers:

The recall affects multiple model years of its F-150 and F-250 pickups. While Ford sells hundreds of thousands of F-Series trucks each year, the report states the recall includes fewer than 25,000 of each model. Here is how it breaks down (Number of vehicles listed in parentheses):

  • 2021-2023 F-150s (24,408) with a production date between January 30, 2020, and December 22, 2023.
  • 2023-2026 F-250s (23,179) with a production date between March 16, 2022, and June 1, 2026.

What you can do:

Ford indicated that it has already started alerting dealers about the issue and plans to send owners a letter notifying them of the issue later this month. In September, the automaker will send out owner remedy letters. 

However, owners may not need to do anything to rectify the problem. Ford plans to solve the issue with an over-the-air software update. Owners may also take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for the update. 

Owners can search for their VIN on the NHTSA website to see if they are affected by the recall.
