Fire forces evacuation of student union at UW-Madison; no one hurt
MADISON— Firefighters have extinguished a blaze that forced an evacuation at a University of Wisconsin-Madison student union.
UW Police spokesman Marc Lovicott says the Madison Fire Department got a call of a fire at the Memorial Union on Thursday afternoon, January 28th.
Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster says the fire broke out just beneath the union's roof, between the roofing tiles and the trusses. She says firefighters had trouble getting to the fire but quickly knocked it out once they reached it.
The fire forced authorities to evacuate the union. No one was hurt.
Schuster says the cause of the fire is under investigation. She says she's not sure when people will be allowed back inside but there's no indication the union will have to close overnight.
