Fire breaks out at home on Franklin St. in Village of Newburg

WASHINGTON COUNTY (WITI) -- Washington County Sheriff's officials responded to a home on Franklin Street in the Village of Newburg in connection with a structure fire.

It happened at 527 Franklin Street.

Fire officials say the upper tenants at the address vacated the building. On arrival, it was confirmed that all tenants from the only occupied unit were evacuated. The unoccupied lower unit of the building was full of heavy smoke and some visible flames.

The Newburg Fire Department quickly extinguished the flames on arrival.  There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

The fire was first detected by the upper unit tenants when awoken by the family dog. They noticed heavy smoke in the apartment and evacuated, only to find the lower unit on fire. The tenants notified the sheriff’s office via ‘911’. There were working smoke detectors in the building. There was no need for Red Cross assistance, as the tenants had other living arrangements made.

The fire is being investigated by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations. The cause of fire is not known at this time.

There is moderate damage to the property as a result of heavy smoke and fire, but no dollar estimates are available.
