Fest goers satisfied with security at Festa Italiana

MILWAUKEE -- The horrific mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado during a midnight showing of the Dark Knight Rises early Friday, July 20th caught an isolated large gathering of people. That scenario weighed heavily on people attending other large events, like Festa Italiana.

The folks FOX6 News spoke with Saturday seemed very comfortable in the massive crowd environment. It seems part of that is because of the security measures taken by festival organizers.

Saturday, more than 20,000 people came to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Festa Italiana.  To make sure everyone had a fun and safe time, eyes were on every person coming through the turnstiles.

“I think we`re a little bit more aware of taking a look at the gates and people who are entering the grounds. We`ve really had some close coordination with Summerfest security, MPD, as well as the FBI," Festa organizer Gina Spang said.

Security was well prepared prior to the festival starting, but after Friday`s tragic shooting in Colorado, the security team was on an elevated alert.

“I do think that event has heightened our awareness.  We have Festa patrol on foot, Summerfest security on foot and on bikes and we also have golf carts,” Spang said.

Security was continuously on the watch for anything suspicious. Festival goers say they appreciate the measures taken.

“We feel pretty safe right here. While the movie theater incident was certainly unfortunate, these folks aren`t letting it deter them from this large crowd. We wanted to come out and enjoy the fun anyway," Sean Nelson said.

"I don`t feel afraid or nervous. I think it was an isolated incident," Vicky Bohler said.

“It`s always in the back of your mind but you can`t just stay home and hide forever. You have to go out and continue your life and keep an open eye,” John Maniaci said.

Sunday is the last day to celebrate at Festa, so the crowds will be even bigger because Phil Vassar is headlining. Although security is on top of things, Spang stresses self-awareness in any environment.
