Debating their platforms: Candidates for 6th Congressional District come together

FOND DU LAC (WITI) -- On Monday, September 15th, candidates for Wisconsin's 6th Congressional District came together to debate their platforms.

Republican Glenn Grothman and Democrat Mark Harris held a forum in Fond du Lac -- the first between the candidates.

Both candidates discussed the biggest challenges facing the district.

"Getting the economy to grow and getting a healthy economy that extends to all the individuals in the society is really the biggest problem facing Congress," Harris said.

"I think the welfare benefits, the way they are structured in the country, they are both discouraging work and more and more employers are telling me that and they also discouraging people raising kids in an old-fashioned nuclear family," Grothman said.

Grothman edged out Joe Leibham in a close Republican primary race back in August.

The winner of the November election will succeed Tom Petri. He announced in the spring that he will not run for re-election.

Petri is leaving after 35 years in office.
