Crews respond to blaze at senior housing complex in Lake Geneva

LAKE GENEVA (WITI) -- Fire crews in Lake Geneva battled a blaze at Havenwood Apartments -- a senior housing complex in Lake Geneva on Wednesday, January 1st.

The call came in just before 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Havenwood is a facility that houses senior citizens, people with disabilities and those requiring low-income housing.

Fire crews discovered a fire inside an apartment unit on the third floor of the building that had extended into the attic.

The fire was brought under control by 2:30 p.m.

The building had to be evacuated, and residents were placed on school buses to help keep them warm.

No one was injured -- but one resident was taken to the hospital for chest pain.

The preliminary investigation indicats the fire started in a bathroom exhaust fan that may have shorted out. The exact cause remains under investigation.

The Red Cross is helping residents from two units -- who were displaced.
