Could Shorewood become the next community to pass a sex offender ordinance?

SHOREWOOD (WITI) -- Shorewood could become the next community in Milwaukee County to place limits on where registered sex offenders can live.

The village's Public Safety Committee asked their attorney to draft the ordinance.

The plan is for the committee to discuss that ordinance in September.

After Whitefish Bay passed a similar ordinance, Shorewood joins Hales Corners and River Hills as the only communities in Milwaukee County without rules that limit where sex offenders can live.

One Shorewood resident says she's still upset because Shorewood discussed this type of ordinance 10 years ago, but never passed one.

"It's very discouraging because it was brought up ten years ago,  and in other communities, the resident would bring it to the attention of the communities -- and they did something about it," Mary Jo Kukoda said.

"The concern they had at that time was the legality of enacting and enforcing restrictions on sex offenders, particularly those involving residency," Shorewood Village Attorney Raymond Pollen said.

The difference, officials say, is that such ordinances have since been upheld in other places, and with neighboring communities like Milwaukee and Whitefish Bay passing similar ordinances, the board believes Shorewood should be next.

Milwaukee passed its own sex offender ordinance in July.

It states sex offenders must live at least 2,00 feet from schools and daycares.

Whitefish Bay's ordinance calls for a buffer zone of 1,700 feet.
