MILWAUKEE -- Every year, and advocacy group releases its list of the 10 worst toys for children. These are toys described by the group that have the "potential to seriously harm or kill children."
The list is put out by the group W.A.T.C.H. - World Against Toys Causing Harm.
FOX6's Contact 6 went to a Milwaukee-area big box store and found four of the toys listed in the report on store shelves.
The "Avengers Gamma Green Smash Fists" cost about $17 and helps children throw punches like The Hulk. W.A.T.C.H. says there's a potential for blunt impact injuries, and there is no warning label from the company on the box.
The "Nerf Vendetta Double Sword" is also on the list. Contact 6 found it is semi-soft to the touch, and the company does provide a warning that the user should not "poke or swing at people or animals."
For $30, the "Power Rangers Super Samurai Shogun Helmet" provides a cool-looking face mask for children, and has blade-like fixtures that expand at the top of the head area. But W.A.T.C.H. says it has the potential for impact and puncture wounds.
W.A.T.C.H. also says "watch out" for the VTech "Explore and Learn Helicopter." Despite the industry's standard requiring strings on playpen and crib toys to be less than 12 inches in length, manufacturers are still permitted to market "pull toys" - like the "Explore and Learn Helicopter" - with a cord measuring approximately 24 inches, which W.A.T.C.H. says can be a choking hazard.
What's not on the list is a simple latex balloon. The United States Public Interest Research Group - or USPIRG - says the latex balloon has caused more choking deaths than any other product on the market. Some 40% of the choking fatalities reported between 1990 and 2009 involved these balloons.
The best type of balloon to buy for a child is a mylar balloon.
