College basketball player shot to death as he lay in bed next to suspect's 1-year-old daughter

KANSAS CITY, Missouri -- New details have emerged in the fatal shooting of a college basketball player in Kansas City, Missouri, Saturday morning, October 1st.

Prosecutors filed charges Monday against 21-year-old Damon M. Hammons for second degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of 23-year-old Marcus Mondaine.

Police have not yet taken Hammons into custody as of Tuesday afternoon, October 4th.

Mondaine's girlfriend told police her boyfriend was shot while he lay in bed next to her one-year-old daughter.

Court documents revealed that the suspect, Hammons, is the woman's ex-boyfriend and the biological father of the little girl.

She said Hammons entered her apartment on East 56th Terrace near Swope Parkway Saturday morning and approached her in the hallway. He asked her who was in the bedroom as he forced his way past her, she told police.

She said she screamed for Mondaine to wake up as Hammons entered the bedroom and fired one shot at Mondaine, who was lying in bed next to the baby.

The child's mother then grabbed the little girl from the bed, she told investigators, and Hammons pointed the gun at them and asked, "Are you going to tell on me? Are you going to tell on me?"

She said Hammons took her phone as she tried to call police. After pleading with him to allow her to call for help, she managed to get the phone back and call 911. Hammons then fled the scene, records say.

The University of St. Mary in Leavenworth said Monday that it had lost a basketball player, student, and friend, issuing a statement about Mondaine's death.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Mondaine's funeral expenses.
