Chase & crash: 24-year-old Mount Pleasant man arrested after police pursuit, crash

MOUNT PLEASANT -- A 24-year-old Mount Pleasant man was arrested Thursday night, August 13th following a police pursuit and crash.

According to authorities, a Mount Pleasant police officer was monitoring traffic on Hwy 31 at Biscayne Avenue around 10:22 p.m. when he observed a vehicle traveling south on Hwy 31 at a high rate of speed.

The officer then clocked the vehicle at 80 m.p.h. in the posted 35 m.p.h. zone. The officer activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to catch up to the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, a 24-year-old man from Mount Pleasant, refused to stop.

The officer terminated the pursuit on Wood Rd.  The fleeing driver continued south on Wood Rd. from Taylor Ave. and lost control after he failed to negotiate a left turn onto Hwy KR and crashed into the ditch.

The man then exited the vehicle with his hands up and was taken into custody without further incident.  There were no injuries as a result of this incident.

The driver had been consuming intoxicants but was not legally intoxicated.  He admitted to fleeing to avoid receiving a speeding ticket.  He was taken to the Racine County Jail where he was held on the following charges: Fleeing and eluding and recklessly endangering safety.
