Celebrating Earth! Schlitz Audubon Nature Center shows you how

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The great outdoors is a part of Jim Hyatt's everyday life.

Although he works at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, he loves spending his free time teaching his son Dylan everything he knows.

"Just going outside it`s therapeutic just the natural beauty of nature you know we don`t want a place like this to go away," said Hyatt.

On Earth Day, Schlitz has plenty going on, but this weekend, organizers are ramping up their programming for the Earth Day Celebration.

Visitors can learn all about the plants and animals on the 185 acres of land by going on nature walks.

"We have trained naturalists that come and they`ll lead you on these walks and they`ll talk about the birds that you see or the frog we`re hearing in the background right now that spring peeper," said Hyatt.

There will also be canoe rides.

"What we`re trying to do with Earth Day is just to show people how great it is to be outside to be out in nature and canoeing you can actually get out to different parts of water bodies that you normally wouldn`t be able to get to," said Hyatt.

Families will get the opportunity to meet birds of prey like Skywalker the red-tailed hawk.

"People are amazed seeing them out in the wild but it`s generally far away, so when they see them up close they see not only how beautiful they are but how powerful they are," said Raptor Educator Ellen Schneiderman.

A fun way to appreciate and learn all about the world around us.

The Earth Day Celebration at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center will take place this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

For nonmembers, it's $6 for children and $7 for adults.

For members, it's $5 for children and $6 for adults.
