BloodCenter of Wisconsin kicks off "Season of Giving Blood Drive"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Donating blood holds a very special meaning to Constance Johnson.

"Grateful, grateful, grateful," said Johnson.

It was five years ago when her daughter, Alexis, was diagnosed with Cohn's disease and was in need of a blood transfusion.

A perfect stranger came to the rescue.

"I don't know who it is that saved my baby's life but I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you," said Johnson.

That's why Johnson is participating in the BloodCenter of Wisconsin's Season of Giving Blood Drive.

"You never know who you are helping. It could be a neighbor, a family member, or a friend, and you could be saving someone's life so that's really a powerful gift to give," said BloodCenter of Wisconsin Public Relations Director Fay Spano.

Through the two-day event the BloodCenter of Wisconsin is hoping to see 800 donors.

One donation can save up to three lives, but only 5% of the population donates blood.

"We are really in critical need of 0 negative blood right now. As you know it's the universal blood type so it's used by first responders and flight for life," said Spano.

Blood only has a shelf life of 42 days, that's why the BloodCenter of Wisconsin is always encouraging new donors and regular donors like Wayne Pratis to help this effort.

"It's just something I like to do and it's fun and it's easy, and you know you're doing something good for the community," said Pratis.

Inspiring young people like Alexis to look forward to the day when she's old enough to help save a life, as it was an anonymous donor who saved her.

"Blood donors are heroes to me because they're helping people live everyday," said Alexis.
