Autopsy on nearly seven-day-old infant finds no trauma noted

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office completed its autopsy on Tuesday, January 8th of a nearly seven-day-old baby boy who died on Monday, January 7th.

The autopsy found there was no trauma to the child. The cause of death is pending further testing and review.

The infant boy was reportedly co-sleeping with his mother on the couch in an apartment located near 61st and Capitol. He was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at 4:32 a.m.

A report released by the Medical Examiner indicates the mother of the child put the baby to bed in a bassinet around 11 p.m. She then went to the living room to sleep on the couch. The report says the baby's father awoke around 1:30 a.m. when the baby was "fussing." The father gave the child to the mother to be fed. Hours later, around 4 a.m., the report says the father woke up and found the infant and the mother lying together on the couch and the baby was unresponsive.

The Medical Examiner's report says the mother had five alcoholic drinks throughout the day -- the last one around 11 p.m. The report says she did not recall being awake or breast-feeding around 1:30 a.m. as the father stated. 

The case has been referred to the Milwaukee Bureau of Child Welfare. The District Attorney's Office is also reviewing the case.
