ARRESTED: Man taken into custody after nearly striking officers, leading police on pursuit

NEW BERLIN (WITI) -- A 51-year-old New Berlin man was taken into custody late Friday night, August 8th after he nearly struck several officers and a prisoner before leading police on a short pursuit.

New Berlin police were conducting a domestic violence investigation in an apartment complex in the 1500 block of Sunnyslope Road around 11:23 p.m. when a vehicle unrelated to the investigation sped through the parking lot -- nearly striking several officers and a prisoner.

Initial attempts to stop the vehicle by officers on foot were unsuccessful.

A short time later, an officer in a squad car located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. After a pursuit lasting for several blocks, the driver stopped the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

After a short foot pursuit and various forms of less lethal force, the 51-year-old New Berlin man was taken into custody.

A 47-year-old Brookfield woman, a passenger in the vehicle, was also taken into custody for obstructing an officer after interfering with officers' attempts to take the man into custody.

One officer and the suspect were treated at a hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

Police will be referring charges to the Waukesha County District Attorney's Office for sixth offense operating while intoxicated, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, eluding an officer, battery to a police officer, attempt to disarm a police officer, resisting an officer and obstructing an officer -- against the 51-year-old man.
