"A great day:" Volunteers come together for 21st annual Spring River Cleanup

MILWAUKEE -- It's no coincidence, the day after Earth Day is the 21st annual Spring River Cleanup.

Organizers say thousands of volunteers went to places like Estabrook Park to help clean up the Milwaukee River Basin.

There were 50 clean-up locations that ran along the Milwaukee, Kinnikinnic, and Menomonee Rivers.

The rivers are home to all kinds of aquatic life -- and garbage in the waters can be a big problem for them.

Organizers say Saturday's event is kind of like "spring cleaning" for the environment.

"You can see by all the families and little kids, it's a great day to be out and doing something valuable for the park system and for the earth," said John Shank, lives in Shorewood.

This is one of the largest clean-ups in the state with about 3,500 volunteers expected to come out.
