81-year-old man cited, 23-year-old woman killed in serious, three-vehicle crash in Bristol

VILLAGE OF BRISTOL (WITI) -- Kenosha County Sheriff's officials say one person is dead, and another person was taken to the hospital by Flight for Life after a serious, three-vehicle crash on US 45.

It happened just after 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 8th -- at the intersection of US 45 and County Highway WG (State Line Road) in the Village of Bristol.

Sheriff's officials say a vehicle being driven by an 81-year-old man from Zion, Illinois was headed westbound -- and proceeded through a red traffic light.

That vehicle struck a semi-tractor flatbed headed northbound -- being driven by a 44-year-old man from Dodge Center, Minnesota.

Sheriff's officials say this collision in the middle of the intersection forced the semi-tractor flatbed into the southbound lanes of US 45.

The semi-tractor flatbed then struck a third vehicle -- headed southbound on US 45. That vehicle, a truck with a horse trailer was being driven by a 23-year-old woman from Trevor, Wisconsin.

Multiple witnesses reported both the semi-tractor flatbed and the truck with the horse trailer had green lights at the intersection.

There were no horses in the horse trailer at the time of the incident.

The 23-year-old driver of the truck with the horse trailer was killed in the crash. Officials have identified the woman as Kathryn Kowalczyk.

The 81-year-old driver of the initial vehicle -- which Sheriff's officials say ran the red light and triggered the crash, was taken to Froedtert Hospital by Flight for Life with serious injuries. He has been identified as Sandor Katona.

Officials say Katona has been cited for violation of a traffic control signal.

The 44-year-old driver of the semi-tractor flatbed was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Kenosha for treatment of minor injuries. He has been identified as Steven Foote. He has been treated and released from the hospital.

Sheriff's officials say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash.

Sheriff's officials say their investigation is ongoing.

The intersection was closed for several hours after the crash -- due to the multiple vehicles involved and the extent of the ensuing investigation.
