7-month-old child, not restrained in car seat, not hurt after woman flees traffic stop, crash

WAUWATOSA -- Wauwatosa police say a woman in her 20s, driving a vehicle with a seven-month-old child in the back seat was arrested Sunday morning, July 3rd after fleeing a traffic stop and subsequent crash.

The woman was stopped for speeding around 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

After sitting at the scene for a few minutes, police say the woman drove off. Her vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant at 92nd and Burleigh -- and she then took off from the crash scene on foot.

Police say the seven-month-old child was not restrained in a car seat or seatbelt. Fortunately, the child was not injured.

A female passenger in the vehicle was not hurt.

Police tell FOX6 News the seven-month-old child is not related to the driver in this case.

The driver was arrested -- taken into custody about a block from the crash scene, and is expected to face charges.

The child is being cared for by Child Protective Services.
