TOWN OF SHARON (WITI) -- Walworth County authorities have identified the 11-year-old Town of Sharon boy who was shot in the head on Wednesday, July 9th. He is Eric Gutierrez. Officials say he was declared brain dead around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday.

A 911 call to police around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday sent deputies and police to a wooded area along County K in Sharon -- for a shooting involving two juvenile males.

Officials say first aid was given to the 11-year-old boy -- and he was transported to Mercy Janesville where he was declared brain dead on Thursday.

Sheriff’s officials say they have interviewed a 13-year-old boy -- and a handgun has been located and collected along with other pieces of evidence.

"The investigation continues.  The families are certainly distraught, but they are very cooperative," Walworth County Undersheriff Kurt Picknell said.

The incident occurred about a half-mile away from the boy's home.

"It would be a friend - a friend`s place," Picknell said.

Sheriff’s officials say their investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement officials say it’s too early to call this incident an accident.

"It's been extremely trying for the families and also for the police and rescue that responded to the scene," Picknell said.
