Woman charged in incident involving live-in boyfriend with brain injury

RACINE (WITI) -- 39-year-old Deanna Topping of Racine has been charged with one count of aggravated battery to the physically disabled for an incident that occurred on Wednesday, January 23rd involving Topping's live-in boyfriend.

Topping faces this charge for an alleged incident involving Walter Schultz, Topping's live-in boyfriend who has a brain injury.

The criminal complaint in the case indicates Topping and Schultz visited a pharmacy to pick up Schultz's medication, when a staff member observed Schultz had a black eye. When he was questioned about what happened, Schultz told the staff member Topping had hit him, but said if she was questioned about it "she would say it was an accident."

The criminal complaint says when Schultz was interviewed by police, he told them Topping was driving and he was the passenger, when Topping got angry with him and punched him in the shoulder. Schultz told officials one of the punches struck Schultz in the eye.

The criminal complaint states when asked whether Schultz feels safe with Topping at this home, Schultz said "he needed some time to think." Schultz reportedly told officials Topping "tended to be angry towards him." 

The criminal complaint in the case says when interviewed by police, Topping admitted to striking Schultz because she said he was being disruptive and pulling on her jacket while she was driving. However, Topping denied causing bruising around Schutz's eye.

Topping was arrested for battery to a disabled person, domestic abuse. Topping and Schultz's child was taken by Child Services.
