Traffic alert: Bridge demolition could slow traffic in Racine Co.

RACINE CO. (WITI) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has begun demolition work of the northbound I-94 bridge over Highway 20 in Racine County.

Both those who drive and those who work in this area of Racine County are ready for road reconstruction.

"It's gotta be done, if you're gonna make four lanes on each side," said Steve Basil, Citgo manager. "We'll get an email, and then we'll print them up, and then we put them up, as they go--because it changes."

On Friday night, Highway 20 under I-94 will be open while the northbound I-94 double lane closure in the work zone will be in effect from 9:30 p.m. to 8 a.m.

On Saturday, Highway 20 under I-94 will be closed from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.  The double lane closure on northbound I-94 in the work zone will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.

"Motorists that are using I-94, north or south, will see some lane reductions, in the overnight hours," said Brian DeNeve, WisDOT spokesperson. "It's probably reached the end of its useful life. We wanna make sure it's a safe and secure bridge--not just now, but in several decades to come."

DeNeve says in the overnight hours, there will always be a lane of traffic open in both directions.

Traffic may be significantly slower than we would want, but remain patient to ensure everyone's safety.
