Money stolen from Milwaukee church

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are searching for a person who they say stole money from a downtown church.

The offering box at Brew City Church on N. Van Buren was first noticed missing last Sunday, October 20th after the second and final service of the morning.

The lead pastor, Randy Knie, explained that there is normally over $1,000 in there each week. The money goes toward the church's mortgage and staff, as well as back into the community through things like service projects.

On Wednesday, Milwaukee police showed up at the church to ask more questions and get more details. But they said right now, there is not much information available other than the general time frame it was stolen.

The church's pastor said from now on they will secure their collection box better, but that's as far as their changes will go.

“We'll be protecting the people's investments into what's happening here so we'll secure our offering box. We still will have an offering box, we'll make sure it's secure,” said Pastor Knie. “But as far as limiting who comes here and who doesn't, who comes here to worship among us, in no way will we limit that at all. We`ll welcome everyone with an open armed embrace.”

Pastor Knie said they plan on building a new collection box this week to set out for this coming Sunday. This one will be nailed and secured to the table, and the table will be secured to the wall.

Pastor Knie said while it would be nice to get the money back, right now they have a broader focus.

“This is where the rubber meets the road for us. It’s easy to talk about manifesting the heart and ministry of Jesus and bring forgiveness and love and peace. But when something like this happens, that's when you really find out what you’re made of,” said Knie.
