Woman sitting on couch is struck by gunfire

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a shooting that occurred on Friday morning, May 9th in the 3400 block of N. 12th Street.

Markers indicate where bullets pierced a home.

"It's a real sad thing when you can't be in your house and feel safe," said Dice Jones, concerned resident.

Neighbors in the 3400 block of N. 12th St. say they're jaded by the all too common gunfire in the area.

"It's bad that I'm not shocked, but it's bad," said Jones.

The victim's friend says a few people were gathered in the bedroom when all of a sudden they heard shots. A bullet came flying inside and a 24-year-old female victim was shot as she was lying on a couch.

"I feel bad about the person that got shot, she could have died," said Randy Coareman, concerned resident.

Police say the victim is going to be OK, but what might be even more disheartening is that there were several children in the home when bullets started flying. Luckily, none of them were hit.

"I live around here too and my kids run up and down these streets and I don't want anything to happen to them," said  Coareman,

Authorities are investigating if it was a stray bullet or whether the occupants of the house were targeted. Either way, folks living nearby want any witnesses to speak up.

"If they know who did it, they need to step up and say who did it because that's innocent people," said Jones.

Jones also says the neighborhood needs more police protection so these types of incidents don't happen.

The woman who was shot underwent surgery and is recovering. As of now, police say there are no suspects in custody.
