Police officer's squad car fired at near 37th and North

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee police officer says he was the target of a shooting. Officers were first called to 37th and Meinecke when a 14-year-old was grazed by a bullet. However, FOX6 News has obtained documents that a police officer was also a victim during the gun violence.

The SWAT Team surrounded a home on 37th Street as an armored vehicle bellowed orders. Milwaukee police were relentless in their search for a suspect responsible for firing at an officer.

While responding to gunfire near 37th and North, more shots rang out.

According to a search warrant, an officer heard a pinging sound on the passenger side of his squad car. He got out and saw a fired bullet lying on the ground next to the door, along with a dent the same size of the fired bullet.

Officers then saw people run into a home on the corner. Inside, they found three firearms, including a rifle allegedly belonging to convicted felon Juan Gonzalez.

Neighbors, tired of the gun violence, were relieved to hear police may be looking to charge Gonzalez with first degree attempted homicide. Reports show the suspect was given a DNA test to compare with DNA from any of the three firearms found inside the home.

Jim Shellow says the case seems peculiar and police may have a hard time getting the heavy charge to stick.

"If police don't have anymore than what is set forth in this affidavit, Mr. Gonzalez will just be charged with being a felon in possession of a gun. Do they think he committed a crime where DNA was at the scene? Clearly you don't expect them to find DNA on the bullets on the ground. Certainly you're not going to find any DNA in the dent on the car," Shellow said.

Right now, Gonzalez is being held in the County Jail with charges pending.

The District Attorney's Office says the squad shooting is part of a bigger investigation.

A portion of this case is already under review, however, there have not been any recommendations for charges yet.
