Funeral arrangements set for Trooper Trevor Casper

FOND DU LAC (WITI) -- Funeral arrangements have been set for 21-year-old Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Trevor Casper, who lost his life in the line of duty on Tuesday evening, March 24th.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 29th at 5:00 p.m. at Kiel High School - 210 Raider Heights in Kiel.

Trooper Casper's family members will greet relatives and friends from noon until 4:45 p.m. Sunday at the high school.

A private burial is scheduled for Monday, March 30th at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Kiel.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorials be made in Casper's name.

Trevor Casper's obituary reads as follows:

Trooper Casper was killed as he was following a vehicle being operated by Steven Timothy Snyder of Michigan. Investigators say Snyder had robbed the State Bank of Providence in Wausaukee in Marinette County, firing one round and leaving the bank with cash in a stolen bank employee's vehicle.

Investigators say Snyder then came upon 59-year-old Thomas Christ on Jermac Road in Wausaukee -- shooting and killing him, and then taking off in Christ's vehicle -- leaving the stolen bank employee's vehicle at the scene.

The vehicle Snyder was in was spotted in Fond du Lac by Trooper Casper -- and an exchange of gunfire ensued.

Casper and Snyder were killed.

Ruth Malsack brought flowers to the scene in Fond du Lac Thursday.

"I have two brothers who are police officers, so whenever an officer is down or is in a dangerous situation, it always hits home with me," Malsack said.

Malsack was a social worker who often worked with law enforcement officials in Fond du Lac.

"I saw the job they did. I pray for them every day," Malsack said.

Mark Hopper's staff at Hopper's T-shirt and Trophy Shop took time out from printing Badgers gear to put huge emblems on his storefront.

"It's just hard to find the words to describe it and I'm not usually one at a loss for words either," Hopper said.

Condolences have been pouring in on social media and a Facebook page set up in support of Trooper Casper. This, as a campaign to show support by putting out blue lights continues to grow -- not only in Fond du Lac, but across the country.

Casper is the youngest law enforcement officer to lose his life in the line of duty in Wisconsin. He was killed on his first day solo on the job.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice is leading this investigation, and that agency is working very actively to determine whether Snyder is responsible for any additional crimes -- and exactly what led up to the shooting in Fond du lac.
