Fired police officer fined $2,000, must complete community service

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A fired Milwaukee police officer who was convicted of slamming a suspect's head against a wall has been fined $2,000.

The Milwaukee County judge also sentenced Lloyd to 250 hours of community service. The judge added if Lloyd does not complete the hours of service, he will have to spend 45 days in the House of Corrections.

The defense considered the lack of jail time a success. During the hearing, Lloyd’s attorney remarked, “if a police officer is incarcerated your honor, there are safety issues that arise.”

While the judge took surveillance video of the incident intro consideration when passing on the sentence, he said he also kept Lloyd’s 20 year experience as an officer, his character, and the lack of previous incidents on his record in mind.

Judge Glenn Yamahiro explained to Lloyd, and the court, why this incident still had to be taken seriously and given punishment. He explained that as a police officer, he is held to certain expectations. Further detailing that thought, the judge remarked to the court, “Let’s be honest. If you two guys were out on the street and you weren’t a police officer, and this guy sad these things to you that he said on this date and you knocked him down or popped him. I don’t think anyone would care less. I wouldn’t. We’d shrug and say if you want to run your mouth like that I guess you got what you got coming. But when you have the uniform on it’s a different situation and it’s a different standard. And there’s reasons for that, legitimate reasons.”

Judge Yamahiro also acknowledged that Lloyd has lost his career, and his reputation because of this. Mike Crivello, President of Milwaukee Police Association, commented further on that, saying “We lost a great officer, a great person. We are already too short of officers. ; too short to the point where we cannot afford to lose an officer of this 20 year veteran caliber.”
