Public meeting held on crime in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- With so many shootings over the last two weeks, Milwaukee police are trying to find ways to stem the problem. On Thursday, August 14th, officers held a community meeting on crime on the city's south side.
More than 50 people packed the small briefing room to discuss crime in the neighborhood with police. In the city since August 2nd, FOX6 News has counted 34 shootings -- nine of which were homicides.
Thursday's meeting didn't do much for everyone. Resident Dale Trostorff left with more questions than answers.
"I was hoping to get something on how we’re going to stop it. How the police are going to help us stop or how we’re going to help the police stop it. Just call 911. 911 takes too long to get there. It doesn’t work," said Trostorff.
For Isabelle Cerbantes, the discussion gives her a positive feeling moving forward.
"Once I talked to the officer I believe so because they’ll answer my questions, get the people out of my neighborhood and it can be safe again," said Cerbantes.
Police tell residents they need their help with information -- either by calling in or emailing.
The goal of the meeting, according to police, was to inform people of their plan to stop crime -- especially violent crime in the area. They took questions and tried to answer them. They were also available to talk with residents one-on-one after the meeting.
